Discerning What is True in a Brave New "Post-Modern World
Joel Shaffer, Executive Director-Urban Transformation Ministries
Note: Here is the edited, updated powerpoint presentation for this workshop I taught at the Church Ministries Conference in Grand Rapids on March 11th. I corrected the font on the Neil Postman slide, tightened the grammar on 2 of the slides, and added the citation source on 3 of the slides. I also edited the Howard Zinn slide to make it more accurate. In the original, I realized I could be misrepresenting Zinn by stating he used a “Marxist Lens,” which could lead people to assume that he was a Marxist (although he did use a conflict theory framework for his book, “A Peoples History of the United States”). In actuality, Zinn called himself a Democratic Socialist. If I am to teach about Discernment and Truth, I need to make sure I am practicing what I preach when it comes to logical fallacies.
